VHS Students Participate in Citizens Police Academy

The Valdosta Police Department is currently offering a Citizens Police Academy for the private citizens of Valdosta.  This program is presently being offered as a part of the Law and Justice Internship of the Career Technical and Education Department at Valdosta High School for students who are 18 years of age and have an interest in law enforcement as a career.  (More)
VMS Math Team Brings Home Awards
The Valdosta Middle School Math Team attended the Valdosta State University Middle School Math Competition on May 10, 2010.  They represented Valdosta City Schools well among 17 other schools and brought home many awards. Congratulations Valdosta Middle School Math Cats!!  (More)
J.L. Newbern Middle School Hosts NFL Superstar
Eighth grade students of J.L. Newbern Middle School were given a lesson on life from former Indianapolis Colts player Shawn Harper representing the Pure Love Conference. This abstinence education lesson informed the students of the importance of making positive choices verses negative ones.  A special thanks to Shawn Harper and the Pure Love Conference team.  (More)
Sallas Mahone Fifth Graders Visit Agrirama
The fifth grade students at Sallas Mahone had the opportunity to step out onto a historic site and into the past at the Agrirama, Georgia's Living History Museum, in Tifton, Georgia.  The students were able to experience an atmosphere and environment very different from today's world of living.  (More)
Valdosta City Schools to Host Annual Title I Meeting

FBLA Students to Compete Nationally

On March 26-27, 2010 Valdosta High School Future Business Leaders of America traveled to Atlanta, GA for a chance to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Nashville, TN. Only the top competitors from the state advance to the national level. Valdosta High School had two students to place and qualify.  (More)

NMS Hosts Saturday Academic Enrichment Boot Camp

This “Academic Boot Camp” is the brain child of Ms. D. Goodman.  After seeing that many of the students were not grasping math standards during regular school hours, she realized a need for additional one-on-one time to expound on them. Two other teachers had the same goal in mind. (More)
JL Newbern Middle School Makes History!
This year’s 8th graders scored better than they have in the past 10 years on the Georgia Grade 8 Writing Assessment.  Hard work from many writing lessons using the Writing-To-Win curriculum paid off with big numbers.  (More)
VHS Marchin' Cats Band Boosters to Host Fundraiser

JL Newbern Middle Scored More Than Basketball Points at the Rim!
JL Newbern Middle School Hoops for Hearts annual fundraiser took place March 10th-12th in NMS Gymnasium. Excitement filled the gymnasium all week as students, faculty and staff enjoyed different basketball events. Students got on the boards by donating money to the American Heart Association.  (More)
W.G. Nunn Students Named System Kindergarten and 5th Grade Writing Winners
W.G. Nunn Kindergarten student, Bronwyn Klein, and 5th grade student, Cameron Christopher, were recently chosen as grade level, system-wide winners of the Young Georgia Author's Competition. Bronwyn is the student of Jeanna Clinkscales and Cameron is the student of Ms. Christie Jones.  Bronwyn and Cameron's writing will now compete at the state level.  (More)

JL Newbern Middle School to Host Annual CRCT Parent Pep Rally

JL Newbern Middle School hopes to double the number of parents in attendance to the Annual CRCT (Criterion Reference Competency Test) Parent Pep Rally.  This year the rally will be on March 30th, at 6pm.  All NMS parents will participate in the rallying session, become familiar with test-taking strategies and procedures, and be orientated on the test format.  (More)

Southeast Elementary Starts a Reading Buddies Program

Mrs. LaShonda Bess’ 4th grade class and Mrs. Glenda Schweitzer’s 1st grade have come together for the sake of reading.  These students are participating in the Reading Buddies Program at Southeast Elementary.  Once a week the students meet with their reading buddy and read a book of their choice to each other. Sallas Mahone Students' Art on Display

Several students from Paul Brown's art classes at SM participated in the annual Youth Art Month Program at The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts. Students from kindergarten to 5th grade had entries using a range of media from crayon, pencil, and watercolor.  (More)
Valdosta Middle School Students Perform at State Thespian Conference
On March 6, members of Jr. Thespian Troupe 88779 (all Valdosta Middle School students) attended the state wide conference in Monroe, Georgia.  Three of our students competed in selected scenes and musical performances against other students from all across the state.  (More)
Valdosta High School Names STAR Student/Teacher
Valdosta High School's STAR Student for 2010 is Jordan Rickman.  He chose Ms. Teresa Middleton as STAR teacher.  The Valdosta Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce sponsor the program at Valdosta High School by helping fund the STAR duo's travel to the district and hopefully on to the state competition. Valdosta Middle School Places at MathCounts Competition

Twelve 4th and 5th grade Gifted Program students recently presented their technology related projects at the annual Showcase Excellence in Technology Conference sponsored by the Educational Technology Center at VSU. S-U-C-C-E-S-S-F-U-L was the word for J. L. Lomax’s Spelling Bee for 2010.  The coordinator, Sheila Robinson welcomed all parents and guests and introduced the caller, judges, and spotters. Our caller was Dr. Joanna Bridges, a retired educator from Valdosta City Schools.  (More)

Sallas Mahone Hosts Spelling Bee
Sixteen students from Sallas Mahone participated in the Spelling Bee held in the Media Center.  The Spelling Bee was coordinated by fifth grade teacher Mrs. Brenda Rodgers.  She held practices with the students and planned the exciting event. The Spelling Bee resulted in first place winner Destiny Harris. VMS Student Jared Sirmans Named to Georgia All-State Band
Jared Sirmans, Valdosta Middle School student, has been named to the Georgia Middle School All-State Band.  After two rounds of intense auditions, Sirmans, 13, joins eleven of the state’s best young percussionist and other elite wind players from middle school bands throughout the state. Although the eighth-grader has only been playing for three years, Jared has accumulated quite a list of honors. (More)
S.L. Mason Kindergarten Visits SGMC
Kindergarten students from S.L. Mason recently went on a field trip to South Georgia Medical Center.  Employees of the hospital took the students on a guided tour of the facility.  The children visited the nursery, saw inside an ambulance, and learned about the food services department. (More)
VMS 7th Grade Lady Cats - South Georgia Athletics Conference Champs!
Valdosta Middle School's 7th Grade Lady Cats basketball team won the South Georgia Athletics Conference (SGAC) Championship on January 16th!  The Lady Cats beat Newbern Middle Friday night in the first round, Colquitt County Middle Saturday afternoon in the second round, and beat Tifton 23-7 Saturday night for the championship!! First Annual W.G. Nunn Spelling Bee
W.G. Nunn’s first 4th and 5th grade Spelling Bee was held on Friday, January 15th, in the school’s cafeteria. Ms. Hollie Bullard (WGN-4th grade) was the organizer of the event. After welcoming parents and other distinguished guests, Ms. Bullard introduced W.G. Nunn’s own Spelling Bee Boyz. (More)
VBOE Votes on Furlough Days
The Valdosta Board of Education approved an amended school calendar on January 25, to reflect the 3 additional furlough days announced by Governor Purdue.  Beginning Monday, February 8, the instructional day will be extended 10 minutes to compensate for the loss of instructional days as required by GaDOE. Sallas Mahone to Offer Parent Workshops
On Tuesday, February 2nd, Sallas Mahone Elementary will offer a Parents are Teachers, Too! Workshop from 5:30 - 7:00.  Pizza will be offered to families who attend beginning at 5:30 and the session begins at 6:00.  Everyone is encouraged to stay and hear a performance by the 4th grade chorus at 6:45 in the gym. Valdosta Middle School Hosts Gallery Walk of Learning
Parents and community members enjoyed an evening at VMS listening and watching as students presented projects, activities and lessons they completed the first semester of this school year.  The Drama Club performed a one act play, students exhibited their art work and all academic subjects participated by having students explain and model the activities they worked on in class. VHS Counselor chosen as the Georgia High School Counselor of the Year
Brian Law, school counselor at Valdosta High School was named the 2009-2010 High School Counselor of the Year.  Law received the top honor for high school counselors in Atlanta on November 23rd. He was accompanied by Valdosta High School principal Gary Boling, wife Cindy Boling and 2009 VHS Valedictorian and Georgia Tech student, Allison Hemmelgarn. aw was also named a Top 10 school counselor in the nation in January 2009. W.G. Nunn Elementary Students Help Donate Books to Children in Need
First through fifth grade students from W.G. Nunn Elementary are joining Super Bowl MVPs Peyton and Eli Manning and Scholastic Book Clubs to help donate one million books to disadvantaged children. This fall, each classroom at W.G. Nunn has pledged to read 100 books as part of this program.  (More)
VMS Participates in St. Jude’s Mathathon
The VMS Math Team cheered on as 17 VMS students collected $1,172.32 in donations for St. Jude’s Mathathon, a program designed to give support for the research of cancer for children.  Students were asked to find sponsors to make donations based on the math problems students completed in a St. Jude’s Math Fun Book. VMS Participates in PAGE Academic Bowl Regional Competition

The Night Before Christmas at SL Mason
SL Mason second graders were delighted by the storytelling of the many renditions of The Night Before Christmas, presented by Mimi McGahee, director of the educational training center at Valdosta State University.  The students were introduced to The Georgia Night Before Christmas. which portrays Santa going to many of the cities in our state. A Walk on the Wild Side

What animal has a six inch tongue, brown fur, and turns his feet backwards to hold onto a tree so that it can eat upside down? It’s Pebbles the Kinkajou. The 2nd grade classes at Southeast Elementary School have been studying the importance of camouflage and animals. We had a couple of visitors come to the classroom and give us a close up view. VMS Percussion Ensemble Performs before the Annual Midwest Clinic

The Valdosta Middle School Percussion Ensemble, along with their directors, Travis Downs and Gary Bradley, left Tuesday, December 15th,  for Chicago to participate in the Annual Midwest Clinic: An International Band and Orchestra Conference.  They are the only middle school band in the US invited to perform at this event. (More)

Marchin' Cats Win Battle on the Border
Few people can say they were members of a High School marching band that won a Grand Championship in each of their four years of school. The Marching ‘Cat Class of 2010 achieved the “four-peat” October 24, at Martin Stadium when they took the Grand Prize in the Fifth Annual Battle on the Border. (More)

In September, Anna McCall’s 6th grade science students reviewed the scientific method to answer the question, “What is the dominant color in a bag of Skittles.”   After conducting the experiment the outcome indicated that there is no dominant color in a bag of Skittles. (More)

Sallas Mahone is "Reading for the Record"
Sallas Mahone Kindergarten had a wonderful Read for the Record Day!  The kindergarteners truly enjoyed listening to the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  The children had some very special guests come read to them. The guest readers were Dr. Cason, Mr. Glover, and Mrs. JaBra Harden-Fuller. Valdosta City Schools names Anne Cardella System Teacher of the Year
Dr. William O. Cason, superintendent, surprised W.G. Nunn Elementary's Anne Cardella when he announced that she had been chosen as Valdosta City School System's Teacher of the Year.  Dr. Cason and Principal Gary Mims made the announcement at a faculty meeting in the new facility.  Cardella is the 3rd System TOTY from WGN.  Congrats!!
